“SOUNDWORKS SPOTLIGHT” ARTIST: MONKEYBACON
Welcome to Subzero Soundworks. Well, I had a chance to pimp out my MySpace page a little this week. I’ve still got to tinker with the CSS for including my Podbean player so that you can stream and listen to the show right from the page, but for now, head over myspace.com/subzerosoundworks and check out what I’ve done with the place. While you’re at it, please feel free to add me as a friend. I won’t lend you any money, but I make some pretty good company nonetheless. Episode #13 features some new names as well five or six artists I’m sure you’ll recognize from previous shows, but the music is all chilled out and great to listen to when you’re cooling down from the summer heat. Sixteen great lounge, downtempo, dub, ambient, trip-hop, and chillout tunes await you. Right now, it’s time for the Soundworks Spotlight. Thanks to my friends at iLike Music, our Soundworks Spotlight artist for Episode #13 is Monkeybacon.
TRACK LISTING:
**Backing track/theme: Cheju – “Bellflowerroot (Preston Remix)” from the Album “Broken Waves,” available for purchase from the Boltfish Recordings website.
1. Monkeybacon – “L.N.Y.,” available for download or with donation from the artist’s website at monkeybacon.com. Monkeybacon is the work of Paul Malmstrom, who was born in Sweden but currently lives in New Work. He singlehandedly creates a style he refers to as “instrumental quasi-electronica” through playing a collection of old synthesizers, guitars, basses, plus miscellaneous sound generating equipment. His music really defies any sort of categorization, often straddling the line between retro lounge, chillout, and experimental electronica. Monkeybacon cites some of his influences as ABBA, James Brown, and Miles Davis. He has even collaborated on Pepe DeLuxe’s albums “Beatitude” and “Spare Time Machine.” Find about more about Monkeybacon on iLike Music and his GarageBand page, as well as his last.fm page.
2. Monkeybacon – “Chez Marie et Pasqual,” available for download or with donation from the artist’s website at monkeybacon.com.
3. Monkeybacon – “Cabin and Cocktails,” available for download or with donation from the artist’s website at monkeybacon.com.
4. Dynamoe – “When This Is Over,” from the album “In The Wake Of Time,” available from the band’s website at dynamoe.com. Dynamoe is an downtempo group from Copenhagen, Denmark and they appeared in Episode #10 of Subzero Soundworks. In addition to their own website, you can find more information about Dynamoe on their MySpace page, last.fm, and on Facebook.
5. Bielebny – “Degu-station,” from the album “Punxsutawney,” available from Jamendo.com. Bielebny is Lukasz Biel, a Polish programmer and musician who was released at least 5 albums through Jamendo. He considers Amon Tobin and Tryad two of his major influences and his mentors, as much of his music is based in sample-based hip-hop and jazz. Find out more about him on MySpace and his Jamendo blog.
6. redmagik – “sound of sommer” single, available from Jamendo.com. Redmagik is an Austrian musician and producer who has released at least 15 singles and albums on Jamendo. Check out all of his releases, which vary in style from blues and folk to world to electronica, at his artist page on Jamendo.
7. Screenatorium – “The Answer Lies,” from the “Blue Morning” EP, available from Jamendo.com. Screenatorium, a trip-hop quartet from Lyon, France, previously appeared on the show with “Pearls,” which kicked off Episode #9. Find out more in the show notes for Episode #9, or head over to their MySpace page or their Electrobel netlabel page.
8. SM – “Tribute to ORE,” from the album “Insomnia,” available from the elpa netlabel. SM is Sergey Yakimov from Ekaterinburg, Russia. He specializes in a style that combines ambient, dub, ethnic music, and instrumental music. Please visit him at his last.fm site of head over to the elpa netlabel for more great ambient and glitch releases.
9. Fonogeri – “Under Whispering Trees,” from the album “Letters From Home,” available from Jamendo.com. Fonogeri is Gergő Gyula, an electronica and downtempo musician who lives in Debrecen, Hungary. I was very excited to see the new release of Fonogeri’s new album, since he was included in Episodes #9 and #10 of Subzero Soundworks and his previous album “Marbles” was such a treat to listen to. Visit Fonogeri’s website or his MySpace page to learn more about this fantastic downtempo artist and to listen to some tracks from his newest album.
10. Antony Raijekov – “Go ‘n’ Drop,” from the “Jazz U” release, available from Jamendo.com. Antony Raijekov is a chillout and lounge musician and producer originally from Sofia, Bulgaria. We last heard him on Episode #10 with “Ambient-M” from the same album. It’s really a great lounge album and I highly recommend it. He’s currently based out of Vienna, Austria, and you can learn more about him at his website and his MySpace page.
11. Guitoud – “Louisiana & Jamaica,” from the album “I & I,” available from the Fresh Poulp netlabel. Guitoud graced us with his masterful blend of dub and electronica on the last episode of Subzero Soundworks, and more information can be found about him in the show notes for Episode #12 at subzerosoundworks.podbean.com. Visit Guitoud on MySpace and last.fm to hear more from him.
12. Sine – “To The Sky,” from the “Cosmic Chill Lounge, Volume 3” compilation, available from the Podsafe Music Network and for purchase through Amazon.com. Sine consists of Thomas & Jochen Hauser, who hail from Germany. They have their own production company Cosmic Sound and record label Sine Music, and have released over 200 titles. The Hauser brothers are not only among the most sought after producers in the chillout and lounge scene, but are also skilled at combining guitar, keyboards, and vocals to create the smoothest grooves possible. You can learn more about Sine by visiting their MySpace page or their Sine Music label website and label blog. You can also purchase music from Sine through Beatport and iTunes.
13. Sonic Stylus – “Sun Shift Network,” from the “Language Lab Collection” release, available from the Language Lab netlabel. Swing on over to the Language Lab netlabel and download the rest of this release or other releases there if you enjoy IDM, drum’n’bass, or glitch.

Delicate Noise is the work of Mark Andrushko, a Chicago-based actor, painter, and, of course, electronica producer and musician. His influences consist of Depeche Mode, Massive Attack, and Air. “Filmezza” is his second release, and if you’d like to learn more about him or his music, you can either visit his website or head over to his MySpace page, where you can also watch a video for “Roundlake Beach.”
15. M Productions – “The Beginning,” from the EP “The Creation,” available from Jamendo.com. M Productions is the work of Mikael Gustafsson, a musician and producer who lives in Sweden and specializes in ambient electronica. If you enjoy his work, visit him on Facebook or his artist page on Jamendo.
16. entertainment for the braindead – “a trace,” from the “Bezdna Radio Essentials, Volume 004” compilation, available from the Silent Flow netlabel. You might remember entertainment from the braindead from Episode #6. Entertainment for the braindead is German singer/songwriter Julia Kotowski. She writes lyrics, sings melodies, accompanies them with guitar or ukulele and then, for percussion, mixes in samples of things found around her kitchen, like peppermills grinding and drawers closing. Truly amazing stuff and a great closer for the show. Visit her on MySpace or at her website at entertainmentforthebraindead.com.
Subzero Soundworks is produced out of northeastern Pennsylvania and the music you’ve just heard has been released under a Creative Commons license to support the artists. You’ll hear some great new chillout, ambient, downtempo, and smooth electronica in Episode #14 in a just a few weeks.
